Asbestos gasket

Asbestos gasket is a sealing material made of natural asbestos fiber as the main base material, mixed with rubber, filler and reinforcing material. It is widely used in flange sealing of industrial equipment. It is favored by heavy industry for its good high temperature resistance, pressure resistance, corrosion resistance and sealing performance.

Common types

Asbestos rubber sheet gasket: the most common form, cut from asbestos rubber composite sheet, suitable for conventional working conditions such as water, oil, and steam.

Metal reinforced asbestos gasket: stainless steel wire mesh or steel plate is sandwiched in the middle to improve pressure resistance and impact resistance, and is used in high temperature and high pressure environment.

Edge-wrapped asbestos gasket: the edge is coated with metal or PTFE material to improve corrosion resistance and prevent asbestos fiber leakage.

Asbestos braided gasket / wound gasket: made of asbestos wire, suitable for sealing pumps, valves and other dynamic and static joints.

 

1. Main features of asbestos gaskets:

Good high temperature resistance

It has excellent heat resistance, and the normal working temperature can reach 250-450℃. Some special asbestos gaskets (such as metal reinforced ones) can withstand temperatures as high as 500-600℃.

 

Strong sealing, suitable for high pressure working conditions

Asbestos fibers have good compressibility and resilience after being treated with rubber and adhesive, and are suitable for medium and high pressure flange sealing. The common pressure level can reach 2.5-6.3 MPa, and some can reach 10 MPa.

 

Good chemical stability

It has strong resistance to media such as water vapor, air, oil, weak acid and weak alkali, and can still maintain structural stability under high temperature and high pressure.

 

Easy processing and strong adaptability

It can be cut into round, oval and special-shaped gaskets according to various flange standards, and can also be reinforced with metal wire to improve strength.

 

Low cost, suitable for large-scale use

Compared with high-end materials such as fluororubber and PTFE, asbestos gaskets are cheap and simple to manufacture. They are economical sealing solutions for many old equipment or industrial systems.
